About Congregation Beit Tikvah

This is Not Your Grandfather's Shul

We are a warm, diverse, and egalitarian Jewish Reconstructionist congregation located in Roland Park. We take a progressive approach to Jewish life, integrating a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the insights of contemporary life. Beit Tikvah welcomes families, interfaith couples and individuals regardless of race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Our building is wheelchair accessible.

Beit Tikvah was founded in 1985 and is served by our full-time Reconstructionist rabbi of seven years, Elizabeth Bolton.

The Beit Tikvah community is approximately 100 membership homes. Youth programs and our Kesher Sunday School nurture our children from birth through young adulthood. We offer adult education programs and a range of regional and community social action activities.

We meet in a sanctuary established by and shared with the First Christian Church, at 5802 Roland Avenue, at the corner of Roland and Lake Avenues in Roland Park, about 5 blocks north of Northern Parkway.

Services are held Friday nights and Saturday mornings and on Jewish holidays (see the calendar for the most current service schedule). In the Jewish Reconstructionist tradition, Rabbi Liz and congregants share service leadership. There are ample opportunities for leading entire services as well as portions of a specific service. Free child care is provided at Rabbi-led Saturday morning and holiday services.

Our Kesher Sunday School enrolls approximately 45 students from first grade through B'nai Mitzvah, meeting Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, at the Waldorf School of Baltimore.

We invite you to visit us sometime soon, and see what makes us a special community.

An Awesome Thing
by Maia Meeron

Upon entering the sanctuary this Rosh Hashanah eve, my jaw dropped in awe at the most magnificent and remarkably beautiful, new wooden hanging gracing the center of our sanctuary. I knew immediately these were truly the days of awe. Not only is our congregation "wandering" as our Hebrew ancestors did ages ago with our portable ark, we also are blessed with our own Betzalel (artisan/architect of the Biblical Tabernacle) in our midst. I believe I can safely speak for the whole congregation and profusely thank Joan Freedman, Brian Berele, and Megan Smith for their marvelous work, which will continue to provide us with great joy and inspiration through the years.
